I am a simple gamer: I see a sprinting infected, I press panic. So when Cillian Murphy finally confirmed he is coming back as Jim in 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, I did a little happy dance that would have gotten me eaten in the first thirty seconds of 28 Days Later. Murphy told Deadline that Danny Boyle had already confirmed it, so he could confirm it. That is the most British apocalypse confirmation possible. No dramatic trailer sting. Just: yes, mate, I am in the zombie sequel. And because the current year is 2026, this is not distant nerd speculation anymore. The Bone Temple is dated January 16, 2026, and the trilogy's future is now a box-office boss fight.

Murphy's return matters because 28 Years Later teased us shamelessly. An early trailer showed an emaciated Infected who looked suspiciously like Murphy, and fans lost their collective minds. Then it turned out he was not in 28 Years Later at all. I have never seen a fandom go from screaming to sobbing to angrily rewatching the original so fast. Now the record is straight: Murphy will be in The Bone Temple, and he will be the first character from the previous films to appear in this new exploration of the 28 Days Later world. That is not a cameo. That is a narrative baton pass with blood on it.

Murphy also said he would be the focal point of the third 28 Years Later film, if it gets greenlit. His exact energy, as reported, was: exactly, so in order for that to happen, every single person has to go and see Bone Temple. I love that. It is not a marketing plea. It is a polite hostage negotiation. Danny Boyle and Alex Garland have said similar: they need to raise the money. In gamer terms, The Bone Temple is the base game, and the third movie is the expansion pack. If we do not buy the base game, the servers shut down and we all pretend we were never hyped.

The spoiler warning is real. 28 Years Later ended with Aaron Taylor-Johnson's Jamie apparently setting out to find his runaway son Spike. The Bone Temple will likely continue that family drama. But my gamer brain sees a classic party swap. If Spike is still central in The Bone Temple, and Jim is central in the third film, then Jim could take the mentor role that Jamie filled in 28 Years Later. That does not mean Jamie has to die. It just means the franchise is leveling up its character build. Also, there are still the Jimmies to deal with, because of course there are. The 28 Years Later universe looked at one Jimmy and said, what if we made it a faction?

What I want from The Bone Temple, as a completely unreasonable fan, is simple. I want Jim to walk out of the apocalypse like a tired dad who has seen too much. I want him to look at the new generation and sigh. I want someone to explain the Jimmies to him and for his face to do that thing where he ages five years in one second. And I want the film to make enough money that the third movie actually happens, because I am not emotionally prepared for another cliffhanger that lives in development hell. The infected do not wait. Neither should we.

So here is my survival plan for 2026. Step one: watch 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later again, because homework is important. Step two: see 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple in a theater, ideally with snacks that do not make me feel like a hypocrite during the infected scenes. Step three: drag at least one friend who says they do not like zombie movies. Step four: if the third film gets greenlit, act surprised and take full credit. It is the gamer way.
The Bone Temple is bridging new and established elements of Danny Boyle and Alex Garland's post-apocalypse, and Jim is the bloody bridge. I am ready. My wallet is less ready. But if Murphy says every single person has to go see it, then I guess I have my orders. See you in the bone temple. Try not to get infected on the way.
