Why Ms. LaDuca Feels Like a Season 7 Echo

Buffy once took a job as a school counselor in season 7. She was not exactly qualified. The school apparently hired her because she was the Slayer, which is the most Sunnydale HR decision imaginable. Do you have counseling experience? No, but I have died twice and fought a god. Great, the position is yours. Ms. LaDuca, by contrast, is an actual college counselor, so she might actually help students with financial aid instead of accidentally leading them into a vampire ambush. Groundbreaking.

Keiko, Jessica, and the Evangelical Christian Group

Here is where the reboot gets spicy. Keiko and Jessica are part of an Evangelical Christian group at school. The original Buffy had crosses, holy water, and a protagonist who went to a version of heaven after her second death, but organized religion was mostly background noise. The Plot Sounds Like a Vampire Weekend I Would Actually Attend

The reported plot involves two vampires killing a teen and attempting to raise an army during Sunnydale's Vampire Weekend festival. First of all, rude. Second of all, Vampire Weekend is either a music festival joke or the most on-the-nose Sunnydale event since the prom. The last time we saw Sunnydale, it was a giant crater after Spike used an amulet to beat back the First Evil and temporarily sacrificed himself. So the town is rebuilt, the Hellmouth is presumably still a problem, and someone decided to throw a festival. That is either courage or a cry for help.

Nostalgia vs. New Identity

One thing I appreciate: this does not look like a reboot that is replacing old characters with new actors. It is expanding the world. There are hopes that legacy characters like Angel and Spike will return, but the new show does not seem dependent on pure nostalgia. It is focusing on the entire high school, not just a tiny Scooby Gang. Gellar has apparently wanted to bring back dead Buffy characters, but the Hulu series is also creating its own identity. That is a delicate dance. One wrong move and you get Remember This Thing? The Musical. One right move and you get a new generation of monster-fighting weirdos who make the Hellmouth feel fresh.

My 2026 Wishlist for the Buffy Reboot

  • A scene where Ms. LaDuca explains the Common App while a vampire turns to dust behind her.

  • Keiko and Jessica having a theological debate with a vengeance demon.

  • Nova getting a Slayer handbook that is just a chaotic group chat.

  • Buffy returning as recurring, like a cool aunt who has seen too much and owns at least one axe.

  • Angel and Spike cameo, but only if they do not just stand around looking broody in a nostalgia museum.

  • At least one joke about the crater. Sunnydale zoning laws must be a nightmare.

Final Thoughts from a Very Normal Fan

The Buffy the Vampire Slayer sequel series is still Fantasy, Comedy, Drama, and Action, which are basically my four food groups.
